KU TALENT SHOWCASE 2020
KU Studios, Home of Kids Unlimited, Talent Showcase 2020
Hello Friends & Family
The time has come to join us for our Virtual Viewing of KU Talent Showcase 2020. This has been a long time coming and we couldn’t be prouder of the final product.
As you know, we began our Spring semester in January, much like any other year. By March, we were all sidelined by Covid-19, KU Studios was no exception. Thanks to Kelli being in NYC, and ahead of us with Covid, we knew that Zoom was in our future and thanks to our younger generation teachers, we worked hard to get KU classes online. We would like to thank Sierra Sutton and her family (who own the Slaughterhouse) for loaning us all the necessary equipment to put 3 studios on Zoom. Also, a huge thank you to Bailey Cruce and Thea (Taya) Hinojosa for helping this happen, and monitoring the classes, recordings etc. I can tell you with all honesty, I could not have done this without our younger generation. It was such a huge learning curve, and I admit to being in shock over the many losses we experienced.
As we moved through the semester, the losses were huge. All our “small” community shows were canceled. Our scheduled production at Berger Performing Arts Center in jeopardy due to Berger canceling all productions first for June then through the summer. Our fantastic cruise tour to Alaska, (two years of planning) canceled…. So, what do we do? We hunkered down and decided we would adapt and bring our Showcase to the stage. (I should mention, many of our members decided not to join us for Zoom classes and dropped their classes). Though we understand, we appreciate each and every one of you who hung in there and completed the semesters hard work. You kept us going as a teaching team and staff.
Facts: We rented pipe and draping to give the illusion of a theater space at KU. We borrowed a fabulous camera (thank you Tamera) to film the showcase. We used our lighting and borrowed additional lighting from two different sources.
With the help of our Show Manager, Shari Obregon, the filming schedule was developed. Shari, along with Tamera Potter and myself, laid out KU studios, for the safe distancing of those coming into the studio to film, and all costuming was assigned, steamed, tagged, and prepped for each performer. Schedule was on the walls throughout the studio and we knew where every person was to be throughout the week. (I’d like to add that Shari kept track of every human who walked through the door throughout the week).
All that being said, we had a wonderful Show week. It did our hearts good, to put these children and teens in their costumes and bring as much joy as we could to this difficult situation. We kept our traditions as best we could, including the celebration of our seniors Reagan, Alexa, and Austin.
And so, this is what happened at KU during this incredibly challenging time in history. We hope that we have shown our Performers and their families, that it is always possible to see another side of things. It may not be what we wanted or what we expected, but we found out we are capable of so much more. All is never totally lost if we pool our talents and work together as a team.
My personal goal/project was to give KU a little facelift (on a limited budget), so that our families would come back into KU and feel a freshness while still feeling at home. Thank you to Shari and Tamera for being my partners in crime. Who would have thought you could laugh so hard during such difficult times.
And now? We are open for our Fall semester, and in a few days, I’ll give you an overview of how we are proceeding and what great things we have planned for your great kids.
Finally, KU has been hit hard throughout this time, and we could sure use some extra funding. If you’d like to give a donation, you can do so by going to our website www.kustars.com , or paypal, (friends & family option) [email protected]. We would appreciate any donation large or small.
See you soon, and as always, KEEP SINGING,
